A wonderful old building in Sutri, Lazio. This image was taken on a visit to Sutri as part of my Italy street project. 

Sutri is a picturesque town in the province of Viterbo, in the Lazio region of central Italy. This ancient settlement is located about 70 km north of Rome and is situated on a rocky outcrop overlooking the valley of the Treja River.

Sutri is a town with a rich history, dating back to the Etruscan period. The town was an important center during the Roman era and later became a bishopric in the Middle Ages. Its strategic location made it a site of numerous battles and conflicts over the centuries.

One of the most striking landmarks of Sutri is the Roman amphitheater. This ancient structure was built in the 1st century AD and is still remarkably well-preserved. The amphitheater was once the site of gladiatorial contests and other public spectacles, and it is now used for concerts and other cultural events.

Another notable attraction in Sutri is the Mithraeum. This underground temple dates back to the 2nd century AD and is dedicated to the cult of Mithras, a deity worshiped by the Roman army. The temple is decorated with frescoes and sculptures depicting scenes from the life of Mithras, and it provides a fascinating glimpse into the religious practices of ancient Rome.

Sutri is also home to several historic churches, including the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. This impressive structure was built in the 11th century and features a beautiful bell tower and a richly decorated interior. The Church of San Francesco is another important religious site in Sutri, and it is known for its elegant Gothic architecture and its stunning frescoes.
